Yann Castanier was born in Sète in 1986. He lives in Paris and Sète.
He is a graduate of Sciences Po Lyon and Ecole Supérieure des Métiers Artistiques.
Photographer since 2008, he has been published in nearly forty titles in national and international media: Polka Magazine, Liberation, Le Monde, L’Obs, Paris Match, Blick, etc …
He covers social and political news for Liberation since 2016 (French primaries, Yellow Vests movement, Notre Dame de Paris, Soccer World Cup, political party Rassemblement National, etc…).
In the same time, he leads long-term projects from several months to several years. The last one was published in 2019 in Polka Magazine and Liberation: « The voices of Sainte-Anne ». He followed people with mental illnesses from their hospitalization in crisis to their stabilization at home or in care centers.
Previously, he published, already in Polka Magazine and Liberation, a ten-year work on Alzheimer’s disease in which he followed his grandparents, both affected with dementia. Before, he carried out a two-year report in homeless people’s squats in Sète and Montpellier. He also documented for 3 years several extreme-right youth organizations. These reports were published by Liberation, Neon and Obs.
He also carries out assignments for companies: events, conferences, portraits, corporate.
He has been represented by the Hans Lucas studio since 2015.
Finalist of the 2011 Talent Scholarship with « Tempus Fugit ».
Yann Castanier exhibited his work at the FOAM Museum in Amsterdam, in Forum des Halles in Paris, at the Maison de l’Europe in Nantes, during the Boutographies festival in Montpellier, at the Centre National d’Art Contemporain in Grenoble, at the Off ImageSingulières festival in Sète, at the « Portraits of Humanity » festival in Martigues, at the Center Culturel des Amandiers (Paris XXème) and at the A La Barak gallery in Montpellier.
